Behind the Name: The Real Ice Roads
Welcome to the Ice Road Gallery. These photos are from my 10+ years of experience driving the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road in the Canadian North, delivering freight and fuel to diamond mines in some of the harshest conditions on Earth.
It's aprox 900 km and about a 28 hours for the round trip.
Way up here. North of the Arctic Circle.
Coming off a land portage between lakes about 30 minutes from the mine.
Third in the convoy.
This is Lockhart, which is our midway spot between Yellowknife and the mines.
Hard to tell but the ice is 5 feet thick.
A nice sundog just as I'm getting to the mine with my delivery.
Aurora Borealis (northern lights) over the ice road at night.
Northern lights still showing nicely on a new moon.
